Town of Gibsons Location:
BC Sunshine Coast, six kilometers from Langdale Ferry Terminal. Liked: Excellent harbour views, street art. Of Note: Unsightly graffiti here and there, limited services due to a small town size, some retail prices appear higher than in the Lower Mainland. Vancouver, Coast & Mountains Backroad Mapbook (5th edition) Gibsons Coordinates: Page 10 (Gibsons) C6. Related Websites: Gibsons BC - Wiki, Town of Gibsons - Official Website. Other BC Cities, Towns and Locations We Have Visited: Agassiz, Bella Coola, Bralorne, Chilliwack, Fort Nelson, Gold Bridge, Harrison Hot Springs, Hope, Horseshoe Bay, Merritt, Mission, Nanaimo (Old City Square), Port Alberni, Prince George, Prince Rupert, Smithers, Squamish, Telkwa, Tofino, Tumbler Ridge, Vancouver (Seawall), Vancouver (Stanley Park), West Vancouver (Ambleside Park). The town of Gibsons with its 4,500+ residents is the first more-or-less "major" settlement (by Sunshine Coast standards) once you get off the ferry at Langdale Terminal. Six kilometers on Highway 101 (towards Sechelt, and, eventually, Powell River), and you are there. Several gas stations, a few grocery stores, a washer/dryer at the marina, and a shower at the Recreation Center is all an average traveller really needs, and Gibsons has it all. $1.50 for a washer and $1.50 for 20 minutes of using a dryer is quite generous, and $3 for a shower is not bad either. That said, gasoline appeared to be several cents per litre higher in Gibsons than in Vancouver, and some grocery store prices were quite high as well. But we were in Gibsons for sightseeing, and that's a mighty impressive harbour that Gibson's got. On a sunny day like today the views were truly "picture-perfect", and the lack of crowds made the walk around Gibsons Landing, which is a tourist-oriented part of town, that much better.
29. Also on Marine Drive near Pioneer Park is Zoccalo clothing store. See the painting on the left side?
30. $7,500 and it's yours. Apparently, there are more similar paintings for sale around Gibsons, but we have found just this one.
31. Marine Drive on the other side of School Road becomes Gover Point Road. Same idea - about a block of shops and eateries. Also, a tourism info centre and a museum are located off Gower Point Road a few blocks away from Pioneer Park.
32-33. The street banners scene in Gibsons leaves much to be desired. All the banners we have seen look exactly the same. Port Alberni may sleep well.
34. Blossoming cherry trees never cease to impress.
35. What Gibsons lacks in banner beauty, it makes up with this awesome electrical box art.
36. Looking left from Gower Point Road, we see Seawalk and Gibsons Marina.
37-38. Still on Gower Point Road, there is this neat sun/rain cover and a busted piano.
39. We have now returned to the public wharf, and are taking steps to the Seawalk, which has many entrances along its entire length of approximately 800 meters - about 400 meters in each direction from the public wharf.
40. We have gone left (North) first, parallel to Marine Drive.
41. Just one fine view after another.
42. At the Northern end, there are washrooms and a path up to Marine Drive. Or, you can proceed further along the beach.
43. The washrooms and the path to Marine Drive just above.
44. We have now climbed up to Marine Drive and are looking back at where we came from.
45. Now we are walking the southern part of Seawalk from public wharf to Gibsons Marina entrance. Here is a memorial plaque commemorating George Gibson's landing (hence, Gibsons Landing name for this area).
46. Looking to the right, far above, we see the sun/rain cover seen in photo #37.
47. Approaching the Southern end of Seawalk near Gibson's Marina entrance.
48-49. And here it is. Well done.
50. Just past the gate.
51-52. A local resident chilling in the bushes nearby.
53. Gibsons Marina is located at the foot of Prowse Road a few hundred meters from the intersection with Gower Point Road. And, right at that intersection, is Gibsons Public Market.
54. Some sort of a local trivia competition was happening in the atrium at the time.
55. A very impressive two story-high "Seascape" is located inside the public market.
56. A killer whale skull is also on display.
57. The public market has a few shops as well.
Gibsons is a small town, and Gibsons Landing could be all checked out in less than an hour, but, if you are ever in the area, this is a part of BC you don't want to miss. Highly recommended.
